PFUJ condemns trolling of senior anchors, journalists

KARACHI: Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the online smear campaign against senior journalists and TV anchors.

In a statement, the journalist body said senior journalists like Talat Hussain, Hassan Ayub, Muneeb Farooq, and Muzammil Hussain Shah are targeted through anonymous social media accounts.

“Several accounts involved in the campaign belong to PTI supports”, the PFUJ said. Calling upon PTI leadership to respect freedom of expression and tolerate criticism.

“Political parties must rein in their workers and ensure such campaigns against journalists and TV anchors are stopped,” the union stated.

Expressing concern over the safety of media professionals, the PFUJ demanded immediate government intervention.

“The federal and provincial governments must act swiftly to ensure the safety of journalists,” the statement said.

Terming the threats alarming, the PFUJ called for a thorough investigation to expose those behind the malicious trolling.

The PFUJ further claimed that threats to media professionals were issued during PTI’s social media sessions. It called on law enforcement agencies, including the police and FIA, to take immediate notice of the situation and act against those responsible.

The union reiterated its stance on the importance of protecting media freedom, urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and ensure a safe environment for journalists.
