Pindi police officer gets contempt notice for not producing arrested PTI leaders

ATC

RAWALPINDI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday issued a contempt of court notice to Saddar Superintendent of Police (SP) Nabeel Khokhar after the police did not produce Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders who were taken into custody after their indictment in case related to the attack on military installations in May 9, 2023.

On a plea filed by PTI seeking the production of arrested PTI leaders including Omar Ayub, the ATC ordered the police to produce the PTI leaders by 7pm on Thursday.

However, the police failed to produce the PTI leaders, prompting ATC judge Amjad Ali Shah to issue a contempt of court notice to the SP Saddar Rawalpindi.

The judge ordered the SP Saddar to appear before the court at 9am on Friday in person to explain the reasons for disregarding the court orders.

Earlier, the same ATC judge indicted PTI founder and former premier Imran Khan and 60 other individuals on charges of attacking the military installations on May 9, 2023.

The May 9 events started when former Imran Khan was arrested on corruption charges while attending a court hearing in Islamabad. This led to nationwide protests by his supporters, with reports of public property being damaged and attacks on military establishments.

In response, over 4,000 of Imran Khan’s supporters were arrested for their involvement in the unrest, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Earlier, an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad sentenced 10 individuals to prison terms of up to six years and fined for their involvement in the May 9 events, marking the first court verdict in relation to the case.
