ISLAMABAD: The Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court (ATC) court indicted jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday on charges of inciting his supporters to attack the country’s military and its installations in 2023.

The court hearing, which was held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala, and was overseen by Judge Amjad Ali Shah, also indicted 60 other nominated suspects including Omar Ayub in the same case. The suspects pleaded not guilty as the judge pronounced the verdict.

Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, his nephew Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, PTI leaders Raja Basharat, Ahmed Chattah, and Zartaj Gul were also indicted in the same case. Following the court hearing at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, Raja Basharat was arrested outside the prison premises.

Opposition leader Omar Ayub was also taken into custody and transferred to the Adiala Police Post for further proceedings. Azeemuddin, a member of the staff of the PTI founder, was apprehended after the court verdict.

Thousands of supporters of Khan had attacked and torched several military buildings and offices on May 9 last year to protest against his arrest on graft allegations. At least eight people were killed in the violence.

Earlier, an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad sentenced 10 individuals to prison terms of up to six years and fined for their involvement in the May 9 events, marking the first court verdict in relation to the case.

The individuals sentenced include Abid Mahmood, son of Muhammad Saqib, and Ahsan Ayaz, son of Muhammad Ayaz, both from Islamabad.
