PM announces free e-bikes scheme for ‘selected’ students

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has announced a scheme to distribute electric motorcycles among selected students of government schools.

The premier announced while chairing a meeting to discuss measures for the promotion of electric vehicles in the country.

He said like the laptop scheme, e-motorbikes will be distributed to students who perform well in government schools.

The motorcycles are expected to be given to students for free of cost as no charges are received for laptops distributed among the brilliant students of the government schools.

The meeting was informed that since 2022, 49 licences have been issued for the production of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles at the local level, of which 25 factories have started manufacturing these vehicles.

It was informed that the first licence for domestic production of four-wheel electric vehicles was issued in September this year and first indigenously-manufactured electric car will come in the market by December.

The meeting was informed that recharging stations for electric vehicles will be set up on priority basis.

Additionally, Shehbaz Sharif instructed the Capital Development Authority to develop a detailed plan for electric-powered public transportation in Islamabad.

The Prime Minister has directed all federal ministries to exclusively purchase electric motorbikes for federal government departments in the future to conserve national funds.
