PM Kakar calls for swift action against smuggling menace

WEB DESK: Caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has issued directives to relevant departments, urging them to intensify efforts aimed at curbing smuggling activities across the country.

The interim prime minister took charge of a review meeting in Islamabad, specifically focusing on trade and anti-smuggling initiatives within the border districts governed by the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Kakar highlighted the importance of creating alternative and dignified employment opportunities in these border regions. To achieve this goal, he advocated for the establishment of special economic zones and industries.

In addition to this, the caretaker prime minister instructed officials to formulate a comprehensive plan addressing employment prospects, social security, and economic independence for the residents of the border areas.

According to Radio Pakistan, PM Kakar affirmed the commitment of the caretaker government to continue implementing measures to eradicate smuggling throughout its term. He specifically directed the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to prioritise and expedite its scanning and checking project at the Chaman border.

Highlighting the multifaceted approach needed to combat smuggling effectively, the prime minister underscored the importance of controlling the demand for smuggled goods in urban areas.

He urged the promotion of legal trade in border regions, stressing the need for complete documentation. Kakar further directed authorities to activate the track and trace system of the Federal Board of Revenue for efficient cargo monitoring.

The caretaker prime minister’s comprehensive strategy not only addresses the enforcement aspect but also focuses on socio-economic development in the border regions, demonstrating a holistic approach to combating smuggling in Pakistan.
