PM Shehbaz meets ITUC chief, discusses workers’ rights and climate challenges

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday met with International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Secretary General and discussed matters related to workers’ welfare and Pakistan’s climate change challenges.
During the meeting, the prime minister appreciated ITUC’s global efforts for protecting workers’ rights and said Pakistan was actively collaborating with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to safeguard labour rights. He highlighted his government’s initiatives to expand the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) and Workers’ Welfare Fund coverage to benefit more laborers across the country.

PM Shehbaz also mentioned several skill development programs launched by the government to empower youth with technical training. Turning to climate issues, the prime minister said Pakistan remains among the most climate-vulnerable countries, having suffered USD 30 billion in losses during the 2022 floods. He stressed the need for international financial support to address climate-induced challenges.
The ITUC secretary general also acknowledged Pakistan’s measures for workers’ welfare and labour rights protection.
