PM takes notice of salary increase of NA speaker, Chairman senate

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken immediate notice of the unprecedented salary raise for the Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) and the Chairman of the Senate, according to sources.

He has summoned a detailed report from both officials regarding the approval of these pay increases.

The recent notification, issued earlier this year, raised the monthly salaries of these top parliamentary positions from Rs 205,000 to Rs 1.3 million, besides 50 per cent of the revised salary (Rs650,000) as the sumptuary allowance, effective from January 1, 2025.

Both opposition and allies of the ruling coalition have expressed serious concerns and criticised the sharp increase in salaries and dubbed it as ‘unjustifed’ and ‘unreasonable’ amid the growing economic challenges facing the country.

Taking notice of the growing criticism, PM Shehbaz will review the report on the pay hike and would make a final decision accordingly.

PM Shehbaz’s move to take notice of the raise suggests that the matter is now under serious review and may even be reversed, according to sources.
