Police Martyrs’ Day: nation pays tribute to the fallen heroes today

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/PESHAWAR/KARACHI: Police Martyrs’ Day is being observed across Pakistan today (August 4) to honour the sacrifices of police officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
Federal and provincial leaders paid tribute to the fallen personnel and expressed solidarity with their families. President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message, said “the nation salutes the courage, loyalty, and sacrifices of police martyrs”.

He acknowledged the police force’s role in fighting terrorism, crime, and unrest, adding that thousands have given their lives to protect citizens. President Zardari stressed the need to enhance police capabilities through modern training and equipment to meet current challenges, and reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the families of the martyrs.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi called August 4, “a day dedicated to the guardians of internal security.” He said those who gave their lives fighting terrorism and crime are national heroes. The minister said that, “the state is indebted to the families of martyrs”.
‘POLICE HEROES MADE PUNJAB SAFE’
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also paid tribute to the officers. She said that police heroes “sacrificed themselves to make the province peaceful”. She recognized the pain of the families who lost their loved ones and stated that the provincial government would continue to support them through practical measures. She called the blood of martyrs the foundation of the state.
Female Punjab police officer earns PhD while on duty
Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar saluted the 1,700 officers of Punjab Police who lost their lives for peace and order. He highlighted the significance of August 4 as a day to reaffirm commitment to the mission of the martyrs.
KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA SETS UP BLOOD DONATION CAMP
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials and police personnel gathered to honor their fallen colleagues. According to official figures, 2,330 police officers have been martyred in the province over the past 55 years. The highest number occurred in 2009, with 210 deaths. High-ranking officers, including Additional IGs and DIGs, were among those killed. On the day, IG Police, Commandant FC, and other senior officials visited the grave of Shaheed Safwat Ghayyur, offering prayers and laying floral wreaths.
In Peshawar, City Traffic Police personnel participated in a blood donation camp at Police Lines. Chief Traffic Officer Haroon-ul-Rashid noted the prominent role of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police in maintaining peace.
‘SINDH POLICE ARE FRONTLINE AGAINST TERRORISTS’
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori also paid tribute, stating that police martyrs made the country’s corners safe through their ultimate sacrifice. He added that their contribution to national peace is unforgettable and a source of pride for the nation.
Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Shazia Marri paid tribute to Sindh Police on Martyrs’ Day, saying, “Red salute to the soldiers of the country who sacrificed their lives for the country. Sindh Police made unparalleled sacrifices in the war against terrorism”.
“Pakistan, Iran are working together to improve border security”
She said that the Sindh Police martyrs sacrificed their lives for the protection of the people, adding, “Sindh Police always played a role for the rule of law. Sindh Police’s services are a bright chapter in history”.
She said that Sindh Police personnel set new examples of courage on the frontline against terrorists.
Ceremonies, prayers, and tributes were held across the country to mark the occasion, as law enforcement agencies and citizens alike honored the memory of those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
