Probe finds involvement of jailers in extortion calls by Faisalabad inmates

LAHORE: An investigation team of two Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) from Punjab’s prisons department has submitted a report to the interior department regarding suspicious phone calls made by two inmates from Faisalabad Jail.
According to IG Prisons Punjab, Farooq Nazir, a team of undercover operatives from the prisons department conducted an operation to identify the inmates involved in the activity.
Superintendent Mansoor and Deputy Superintendent Ataur Rehman of the Faisalabad Jail have been suspended over involvement in the matter.
According to the report submitted to the interior department, the prisoners used WhatsApp to call influential personalities for extortion and other criminal activities.
A probe is underway to identify how these calls were made from within the jail premises despite the presence of jammers and cell phones used by the inmates have been seized and sent for forensic analysis as per the report.
In accordance with the jail manual, the prisoners have been transferred to lock ups and any contact with the prisoners is strictly prohibited until the probe is concluded.
Meanwhile, a request has been made to the Faisalabad Police to register a case against those involved in the activity.
