ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday announced a registration process for legitimate users of virtual private networks (VPNs) as part of its efforts to “regulate internet security and protect users.”
The announcement follows the PTA’s recent move to block unregistered VPNs, which it says pose security risks by potentially enabling unauthorized access to sensitive information and illegal content.
VPNs, often used globally to bypass internet restrictions, are widely adopted in Pakistan for accessing banned platforms, such as the social media site X (formerly Twitter), which has been inaccessible for several months.
The PTA said it held a consultation session attended by officials from the Ministry of IT & Telecommunication, Pakistan Software Export Board, and Pakistan IT Association, aiming to support the country’s IT and e-commerce sectors within a secure online framework.
“The new process allows legitimate users to register their VPNs through an online portal at ipregistration.pta.gov.pk,” PTA said in a statement, adding that the initiative ensures uninterrupted access for IT companies, freelancers, and other stakeholders, reinforcing its commitment to Pakistan’s digital economy.
The PTA also addressed concerns about potential misuse of VPNs, encouraging companies and freelancers to register to ensure seamless operations and mitigate security risks.
The regulator emphasized that the consultation process reflects its commitment to fostering a safe, accessible digital landscape that balances IT sector growth with national security concerns.
