Public holiday announced for tomorrow

KARACHI: The Sindh government has declared a public holiday tomorrow (Wednesday) in 14 districts of the province on the occasion of local government by-elections.

According to details, the holiday will be observed in Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Matiari. Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Dadu, Badin, and Thatta will also remain closed, while Karachi West, Karachi East, and Keamari districts are included in the notification as well.

The decision has been taken to facilitate voters during the by-polls.

All government offices and institutions in these 14 districts will remain closed on Wednesday, September 24.

The by-elections will be conducted for two district council seats, six chairmen, seven vice-chairmen, and 13 general ward members across the 14 districts.

A spokesperson for the Provincial Election Commissioner Sindh said that 1,512 officials, including 14 district monitoring officers and 21 monitoring officers, will be deployed during the polling process.

The use of mobile phones will be strictly prohibited inside the polling stations.

In total, 167 polling stations have been set up. Of these, 34 have been declared sensitive and 127 highly sensitive. Seventeen polling stations are designated for men, 17 for women, while 134 are joint polling stations.

The number of registered voters stands at 243,187, comprising 133,038 men and 110,154 women.
