Punjab introduces virtual registration card for vehicles

LAHORE: Punjab Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Department has just rolled out a virtual registration card for vehicles, marking a stride towards digitalization in the province.

This move addresses a persistent concern for new vehicle owners who faced fines from traffic police due to the non-issuance of physical registration cards.

Now, citizens in Punjab who’ve registered their vehicles but haven’t received the cards can simply hop onto the department’s website.

Accessible through a website or application, the virtual card can be swiftly downloaded, providing a seamless experience for users completing the online phase of registration and ownership updates.

According to the department’s social media post, owners need to follow a link, enter their registration and chassis numbers, and voila – a digital card is theirs.

Once obtained, owners can download and store the card on their mobiles for easy access. This initiative by the Excise department aims to tackle the inconvenience faced by vehicle owners, shielding them from fines and legal troubles related to missing registration cards.

This isn’t the first digital leap for Punjab vehicle owners; the government and traffic police previously allowed online issuance of learner permits and digital renewal of driving licenses as well as online registration of vehicles and verification. An e-driving license was also introduced for showcasing to traffic wardens, simplifying legal compliance.

These steps offer convenience, allowing people to secure essential documents from the comfort of their homes.

Vehicle owners will have the convenience of acquiring their virtual smart cards online by completing the necessary registration procedures. These virtual smart cards will be readily downloadable from the official website of the excise department. Importantly, they will contain identical information to physical cards, encompassing details such as the vehicles registration number, owners particulars, and vehicle specifications.
