Rare smuggled turtles seized from Lahore airport

LAHORE: Nearly 200 turtles of a rare breed were seized by The Punjab Wildlife Department on Saturday at the Lahore airport.
The turtles were being smuggled from Thailand to Lahore.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities swiftly intercepted the illegal shipment of turtles from Thailand.
These rare turtles were individually packed in groups of 100.

Following the successful recovery of the smuggled turtles, the department has initiated legal proceedings and written to Customs authorities for the formal handover of the confiscated wildlife.
The species is listed in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and its trade is prohibited under the convention.
