Rising temperatures: schools nationwide await summer vacations

WEB DESK: As temperatures surge across Pakistan, Punjab has unveiled its summer vacation timetable for schools and colleges. The Education Department’s proposal suggests a break from June 7 to August 19, 2024, with an official notification expected in the coming week.

Punjab Education Minister, acknowledging the soaring temperatures, has disclosed the schedule for the summer break.

Meanwhile, Sindh is contemplating an earlier closure due to the severe heatwave. A final decision is likely to be made after the conclusion of Class 9 and 10 exams, with the possibility of early vacations for students up to Class 8 also under consideration.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are expected to unveil their summer vacation schedules in the last week of May.

Spanning over two months, the vacation mirrors the pattern of previous years, traditionally commencing in June and lasting until August. This period aligns with the onset of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Weather forecasts for May 2024 predict a temperature rise to 39 degrees Celsius, expected to escalate beyond 40 degrees Celsius in June 2024.

Sunday’s weather: mostly hot and dry, thunderstorms in select regions

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had earlier issued a warning, cautioning that peak temperatures could soar to 49.5 degrees Celsius in June, with August witnessing temperatures reaching a high of 48.63 degrees Celsius.
