Security concerns: Balochistan universities closed

Balochistan universities closed indefinitely

QUETTA: Authorities in Balochistan have ordered the closure of three universities due to security concerns following a surge in militant attacks.

The University of Balochistan, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University and the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) have been closed indefinitely.

The University of Balochistan has suspended classes for an indefinite period of time and has switched to Online class mode, the administration announced.

Similarly, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University had already transitioned to virtual classes for female students due to security concerns, sources confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) has suspended all classes until Eid-ul-Fitr.

According to a university statement, all classes will now be conducted online, while its transportation services have been halted indefinitely.

However, academic activities at BUITEMS’ Zhob and Muslim Bagh campuses will continue as usual.

The decision came after a detailed security review, the official said. “Classes will continue online until further notice due to the prevailing security situation.”

The universities will remain closed at least until after Eidul Fitr, just two weeks away, when authorities will decide on reopening.

Meanwhile, security in Quetta has been tightened, with additional forces deployed and new checkpoints set up across the city.

The closures follow a string of attacks by Baloch separatists, including last week’s assault on a train carrying over 400 passengers. The attack led to a two-day siege and several casualties.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
