Sindh Police to appoint 2,000 ASIs in investigation wing

Sindh Police

KARACHI: The Sindh government has taken a major step to enhance the investigative capabilities of the Sindh Police by approving the appointment of 2,000 new Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) for investigations.

This move is aimed at improving the police force’s ability to manage criminal cases more efficiently and increase conviction rates.

The decision was made during a Service Structure Committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Hyder Shah. Attendees included key officials such as Additional Chief Secretary Home Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon, Secretary Finance Fayaz Ahmed Jatoi, and Secretary Services Ghulam Ali Brahmani, among others.

The Home Department, in collaboration with the Police and Finance Departments, presented a proposal requesting approval for the new positions. To address the financial impact, 2,154 existing posts will be reassigned to make way for the new ASI Investigation roles.

Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah highlighted that enhancing the investigation branch has long been a challenge for the Sindh Police. He stressed the importance of a well-equipped investigation team to ensure justice is properly served. He added that the introduction of these new positions will help address this issue and improve the efficiency of criminal investigations.

Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon explained that the police force has historically prioritised the recruitment of constables, who now make up around 92 per cent of the total force. This focus has limited the growth of the investigation branch. The new ASI Investigation officers, he stated, will play a key role in raising investigation standards, collecting evidence thoroughly, and improving conviction outcomes.

He further stressed that investigations are the backbone of the criminal justice system, and these new posts will allow the police to better gather facts, examine evidence, and build stronger cases to bring criminals to justice.

In addition to these new appointments, the Home Department has also requested approval for the reallocation of 1,038 positions.

This includes 2 Superintendents of Police (SPs), 17 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), 114 Inspectors, 308 Sub-Inspectors, and 587 Constables, who will be transferred from non-investigation units to investigative roles within Karachi Range.

This reshuffling aims to optimise existing resources without adding any extra financial burden.
