Smog returns to Lahore, AQI becomes 156

Smog Lahore

LAHORE: With the start of October, the return of smog in Lahore has once again raised alarm as the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to an unhealthy level of 156 on Wednesday.

The dense layer of smog, a mix of smoke and fog, has begun to envelope the provincial capital, reducing visibility and posing significant health risks to the public.

According to the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the smog in Lahore AQI reading of 156 falls into the “unhealthy” category, meaning that people, particularly those with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children, may experience health problems due to prolonged exposure.

Complaints of cough, trouble breathing and burning in eyes have intensified since the start of this month in the provincial capital.

Health experts have already advised the public to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and use air purifiers indoors to mitigate the effects of polluted air.

Local authorities attribute the rise in pollution to a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and the seasonal burning of crop stubble in neighboring areas.

To control smog in Lahore, the Punjab government has taken several measures including demolishing  600 blick kilns in six  months more than 200 factories have also been sealed.

This annual problem worsens during the winter months, as cooler temperatures and humidity trap pollutants closer to the ground, creating a toxic smog layer.

Efforts by the Punjab government to curb smog have included imposing fines on industries and vehicles that violate environmental regulations.

However, experts argue that these measures alone are insufficient to combat the growing air pollution crisis in Lahore. Despite court orders banning the burning of crop residue and other harmful practices, enforcement remains weak, and the smog situation continues to escalate each year.
