Sukkur barrage’s gate collapse triggers emergency

Gate collapse

SUKKUR: An emergency was declared at the Sukkur Barrage after one of its gates collapsed during ongoing repair works. The incident has led to significant disruptions and urgent measures to control the situation.

The Irrigation Department reported that Gate No. 47 fell unexpectedly, causing water to overflow and flow downstream. This unforeseen event has resulted in the suspension of all traffic across the barrage, as officials scramble to manage the emergency.

Moreover, the authorities informed that Gate No. 44 has also been affected, becoming crooked due to the collision of a large tree. This has compounded the challenges faced by the Irrigation Department as they work to stabilise the structure and mitigate further damage.

Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro visited the site to assess the extent of the damage. He confirmed that the necessary repair work on the gates will require the suspension of water supply to both the left and right bank canals, impacting local water distribution.

“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and functionality of the Sukkur Barrage,” said Minister Shoro. “Our immediate priority is to repair the damaged gates and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.”
