Lahore struggles with shortage of anti-tetanus injections

Tetanus vaccine shortage

LAHORE: A scarcity of anti-tetanus injections, vital for preventing wound infections, has gripped the medical stores and pharmacies across Lahore.

This shortage poses significant challenges for individuals encountering injuries, as private clinics and hospitals also report unavailability of this crucial medical resource.

Medical experts underscore the urgency of administering the injection within 72 hours of sustaining an injury, emphasizing the risk of bacterial infiltration through wounds.

Highlighting the necessity of anti-tetanus injections in infection prevention, medical professionals lament the interruption in its availability.

Pharmacists disclose that a multinational pharmaceutical corporation has halted the production of these injections, amplifying the scarcity in the market.

According to The News, a spokesperson for pharmaceutical manufacturers notes that a significant share of the market was previously held by a company supplying vaccines globally, including to the United States.

This redirection of resources to international markets potentially contributes to the current shortfall domestically.

In contrast, a representative from the Punjab Health Department reassures the public, asserting that several vaccine manufacturers continue to supply anti-tetanus injections.

These life-saving injections remain accessible in government hospitals, where they are promptly administered to accident victims within the emergency departments.
