Three school girls killed in Gilgit road accident

GILGIT: At least three school-going sisters lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries in a road accident on Ghizer Shandur Road near the Basin area of Gilgit in the early hours of Thursday.

According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred near the Basin Police Station at around 8:30 AM when a speeding vehicle struck the girls. As a result, three of them died on the spot, while three others including another school-going girl injured.

Those killed were identified as 15-year-old Aiman, 12-year-old Maheen, and 10-year-old Alia, daughters of Abdul Jalil, a resident of the same locality.

The injured girl was identified as 7-year-old Iraj Fatima, daughter of Farooq. The deceased and injured were immediately taken to the Provincial Headquarters Hospital (PHQ) for medico-legal formalities.

Speaking to HUM News English, PHQ Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Sartaj Hussain Rizvi confirmed that the three girls succumbed to excessive bleeding. He said the injured child suffered minor injuries and was discharged after receiving first aid and required tests.

Following the accident, the enraged crowd set the vehicle involved in the incident on fire. Rescue 1122 in a statement said the crowd initially prevented a fire extinguisher truck from reaching the scene. However, with the support of the district administration, the fire truck was eventually brought to the site, and firefighters managed to fully extinguish the blaze.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan expressed deep sorrow and grief over the deaths of the three schoolgirls.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls. Gulbar Khan directed the police to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident.
