Over 5,400 challans issued in drive against underage drivers in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: In response to the directives from the Additional Inspector General Police (Traffic) Punjab, the City Traffic Police of Rawalpindi has intensified efforts to address the issue of underage drivers, aiming to prevent incidents similar to the one witnessed in DHA Lahore.

According to a spokesperson from the City Traffic Police, a total of 5,440 challans were issued during inspections targeting underage drivers over the past year.

Additionally, 1,744 First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged at various police stations within Rawalpindi city.

The traffic police also took action against violations of the one-way rule, issuing 52,514 challans and penalising 21,329 vehicles for emitting smoke.

Furthermore, a significant focus was placed on enforcing helmet usage, with 114,184 motorcyclists being issued challans for non-compliance. Simultaneously, 54,831 challans were issued to drivers without valid licences, leading to the registration of 777 FIRs for the same violation.

The spokesperson emphasised that the City Traffic Officer has instructed all circle in-charges and sector in-charges to persist with their dedicated campaign against traffic rule violators, ensuring no leniency.

In a separate development, Rawalpindi District Police apprehended 15 individuals involved in gambling activities on Monday.

According to The News, the police confiscated Rs61,580 in cash, which was being used as stake money, along with nine mobile phones and other related items from the possession of the arrested gamblers.
