US “concerned” over PTI leaders’ arrests


The United States (US) State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller voiced deep concern over the recent arrests of PTI leaders in Pakistan on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller voiced deep concern over the recent arrests of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in Pakistan on Tuesday.

During a press briefing in Washington, the spokesperson stated that upholding democratic principles and the rule of law was important.

Miller reiterated the United States’ unwavering support for maintaining peace. He said that it was important for Pakistan to respecting its constitutional processes.

“The reported arrests of PTI leaders are troubling,” Miller stated. He called for adhering to Pakistan’s legal framework and constitutional obligations. He stated that adherence to democratic principles was essential for ensuring stability and fostering a democratic environment within the country.

Miller further expressed the US government’s commitment to promoting and protecting democratic norms globally. “Respect for due process and the rights of all individuals, regardless of political affiliation, is fundamental”.

He urged Pakistani authorities to handle the situation in accordance with established legal procedures and uphold the rights of those detained.

Regarding US-Pakistan relations, Miller said that transparency and accountability in governance was important. “A strong and stable Pakistan is in everyone’s interest”.

The spokesperson mentioned the significance of promoting constructive dialogue and encouraging inclusive political processes.

Miller said that the United States stands ready to support Pakistan in its democratic journey. “We encourage all parties to resolve differences through peaceful means and within the confines of the law”.

The spokesperson also called for a transparent investigation into the arrests and urged respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout the process.
