LAHORE: Traffic flow on Walton Road in Lahore has been significantly disrupted due to ongoing construction work. This has led to difficulties for residents and shoppers in nearby areas, including 7th Street, Defence Mor, and Al Noor Town. However, relief is anticipated by next month.
On Thursday, Commissioner Lahore Zaid bin Maqsood chaired a meeting to assess the progress of the Walton Road Development Scheme.
During the briefing, Executive Director Technical CBD Riaz Hussain informed the commissioner that the 4-kilometre-long Walton Road, which will feature six lanes, is expected to be completed by the end of September.
The road’s construction is currently 35 per cent complete, while a 4.3-kilometre deep trunk drain has been finished.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of the Walton Road Trunk Drain System, flyovers, disposal stations, and rider sewers. The commissioner noted that the construction of rider sewers would prevent street water from flowing back into sewer lanes. An underground trunk for utilities is also being built, along with greenbelts.
The briefing revealed that two disposal stations are under construction on Walton Road, with one station 79 per cent and the other 95 per cent complete. Additionally, the old nullah on Walton Road will be demolished, and wastewater will be channelled through the deep trunk drain.
The commissioner instructed the CBD to adhere to the project deadlines, emphasising the importance of accelerating work. Walton Road is a crucial traffic artery, and the expedited completion of the project is vital for improving transportation convenience and enhancing the area’s overall aesthetics.
The administrative machinery is fully committed to supporting the CBD in achieving these goals.
Due to the ongoing construction work, individuals travelling to Packages Mall via this route, as well as those coming from Ferozepur Road and Kasur, have encountered significant difficulties and have been compelled to use alternative routes. However, it is anticipated that traffic flow will return to normal soon.
