Weather update: Met Office warns of sudden floods in Baclochistan, KP and GB


Weather update: Met Office warned of flash flooding in local water inlets in Gwadar, Washuk, Kharan, Panjgur, Noshki and Kech, Awaran, and Kalat.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a weather alert of potential sudden floods in local water inlets across Balochistan on Thursday (today).

In the alert, the Met Office cautioned that flash floods are likely to occur across Balochistan in Gwadar, Kharan, Panjgur, Jiwani, Kech, Awaran, , Pasni, Ormara, Washuk, Kalat, Noshki, Lasbella, and Khuzdar on Thursday, especially in low-lying areas.

The PMD also warned of risk of landslides and sudden floods in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Kashmir from Thursday till Sunday. Within KP, districts of Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, and Manshera are likely to experience localised flooding and landslides.

The Met Office has cautioned residents to remain vigilant against potential wind and hail damaging structures such as electric poles, vehicles, and solar panels. Farmers in particular were urged to take precautions as lightning, wind, or hail poses a significant risk of crop destruction.

Weather update for today

Meanwhile, the Met Office predicted heavy rainfall with winds and even thunderstorm across Balochistan on Thursday, including Jiwani, Qila Abdullah, Mastung, Chagi, Kharan, Pasni, Ormara, Lasbella, Khuzdar, Kalat, Noshki, Jhal Magsi, Naseerabad, Sibbi, Kohlu, Kech, Awaran, Harnai, Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Saifullah, Sherani, Zhob, Musa Khel, Barkhan Dera Bugti, Loralai, and Gwadar.

Similarly, the country’s most populous province Punjab is expected to be hit with rain and thunderstorms in various districts including Attock, Chakwal, Murree, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Mianwali, Pakpattan, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, and Sahiwal.

In Sindh, heavy showers and winds are predicted for Thursday, with cities including Padidan, Qamber Shahdadkot, Sukkur, Matiari, Tando, Kashmore, Dadu, Naushero Feroze, Ghotki, Jacobabad Mohammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Larkana, Karachi, Thatta, Sajawal . Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Hyderabad, and Badin.

Rains and even snowfall is forecast to pelt Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with Chitral, Dir, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Waziristan, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Karak, Khyber, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, and Kurram getting rain and occasional snow.

Residents in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir can expect weather similar to KP, with heavy rain and winds. The Met Office has predicted snowfall in higher altitudes.

The PMD has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
