Wheat scandal: PM suspends MD, GM PASSCO

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressing his anger over the negligence in procurement of wheat has ordered the suspension of Managing Director (MD) and General Manager (GM) (procurement) of Pakistan Agricultural Storage & Services Corporation’s (PASSCO) for their negligence.
A high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Shehbaz Sharif regarding the supply and demand of wheat and the procurement program of the federal government.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain and others.

Expressing his anger he ordered the suspension of MD and GM procurement for not following the instructions regarding the use of technology in the wheat procurement process
The Prime Minister emphasized that technology should be used to make the wheat procurement process clean and transparent and in this regard, a mobile phone application should be prepared as soon as possible.
He also directed a third-party audit of PASSCO’s stock. The Prime Minister further directed that insurance of commodities should be ensured for the economic security of farmers.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister also instructed PASSCO to purchase 0.4 million metric tons of additional wheat transparently and effectively, saying that any loss to the farmer would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
