KARACHI: The Sindh government announced that May 28 will be a public holiday to mark Youm-e-Takbeer, commemorating Pakistan’s nuclear tests in 1998.

All government and private institutions in the southern province will be closed, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) also suspending trading for the day.

Youm-e-Takbeer is recognised as a national, gazetted holiday in the country; reaffirmed by Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif last year. On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Chagi hills of Balochistan.

The test positioned Pakistan a the seventh nuclear-armed state globally and were a response to regional security dynamics, particularly following India’s nuclear tests in 1974.
