Another U-turn: Imran Khan ‘willing to talk’ to PM Shehbaz

Imran Khan agrees to talk to Shahbaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: In a major shift, jailed PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has agreed to engage in dialogue with the federal government, following a recent offer from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The News quoting sources reported that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan met Khan at Adiala Jail on Monday, where the former premier gave his nod to initiate talks. However, Khan stressed that discussions should take place away from media spotlight to ensure productive outcomes.

PTI leadership is now expected to formally approach the government to begin the process. Insiders said earlier efforts at negotiation had failed due to media pressure, which is why this round is being planned behind closed doors.

Speaking to The News, Barrister Gohar confirmed conveying the prime minister’s offer to Khan but declined to share details. “I can’t divulge what was discussed between us,” he said.

This development comes days after PM Shehbaz, in a speech in the National Assembly, extended an open invitation to PTI for national dialogue. Although Gohar had welcomed the gesture, the party had made it clear that no move would be made without Khan’s approval.

Sources within PTI further revealed that Imran Khan wants the talks to have support from the military establishment. One insider claimed Khan is even open to meeting an establishment representative to help push things forward.

The political thaw comes at a time when national unity is being widely called for, especially after the recent escalation with India. Whether this quiet backchannel will produce results is still uncertain.
