Azhar Siddique and Afnan Ullah Khan lock horns

May 9

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Azhar Siddique and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Senator Afnan Ullah Khan engaged in a heated exchange during the episode of Hum Dekhenge on HUM News.

During the programme, host Mansoor Ali Khan delved into the events of May 9 and the alleged targeting of military institutions and disrespect towards martyrs by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).

Khan posed a question to PTI leader Azhar Siddique, suggesting that it might have been more appropriate for PTI to issue an apology on Defence Day for the events of May 9. Siddique responded by acknowledging that many PTI leaders have already made statements regarding the May 9 violence. He emphasized the importance of discussing progress and political unity for the betterment of Pakistan, rather than dwelling on past mistakes without reason.

Additionally, host Khan directed a question to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Senator Afnan Ullah Khan about the polarisation among the masses, highlighting that September 6 symbolises a connection between the people and the Army.

Afnan condemned the May 9 violence and suggested that if PTI recognises its mistake, the PTI chief should apologise to the nation. He pointed out that PTI’s actions had the potential to incdite civil unrest, and he stressed the importance of political unity, cautioning against actions that would lead to chaos.

Furthermore, he said that had PTI been held accountable for its actions in 2014 when it targeted Pakistan Television (PTV) headquarters and Parliament, they might not have repeated such incidents, indicating premeditation.

Meanwhile, Siddique chimed in, emphasising the need to shift focus away from past incidents and toward addressing the nation’s economic challenges. He urged all political parties to come together, highlighting that constant infighting erodes public trust in the nation.

Host Khan further questioned Afnan about the reconciliation between PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), despite the past accusations of dividing the nation. Afnan defended the current unity efforts, mentioning that PML-N leaders had also faced detention, with Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz having spent time in jail.
