ECP issues code of ethics for press ahead of general elections

deadline extended

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a code of ethics for both national and international media, emphasising the importance of adhering to principles during the upcoming general elections.

Sources suggest that the ECP has expanded the code to include national press members, requiring press accreditation from the commission.

According to the code of ethics, press members are obligated to prioritise the security of Pakistan and the fundamental rights of the people. It is imperative to follow national laws and respect the powers of the ECP, with a strict prohibition on expressing support for any party or candidate.

Additionally, the media is instructed not to disseminate content contrary to national security and ideology while also showing respect for the freedom of national institutions and the judiciary.

The ECP states that the code of ethics will be applicable from the electoral schedule to the notification of success. Failure to comply may lead to the revocation of accreditation.
