JI considering challenging 26th constitutional amendment in SC

The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman criticised the Pakistani government on Wednesday, accusing it of severe economic mismanagement and failing the public.

ISLAMABAD: Amid ongoing political and legal debates surrounding the 26th Constitutional Amendment, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Hafiz Naeem has indicated that a legal review is underway to challenge the amendment in the Supreme Court.

During consultations, Hafiz Naeem emphasised the importance of scrutinising the legal process behind the amendment and urged opposition leaders not to support it.

Expressing concern over the recent parliamentary proceedings, Hafiz Naeem criticised a small faction of the opposition for voting in favour of the amendment. He claimed that some individuals had succumbed to pressure, while others had been influenced by financial incentives. “Some people get sold out, and some get pressured,” remarked the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, alluding to external factors impacting the vote.

Hafiz Naeem also voiced broader concerns about the long-standing effort to seize control of the judiciary, suggesting that this agenda had been in motion for an extended period. Referring to the political landscape, he mentioned that PDM-3 had been particularly active the previous day, hinting at the shifting alliances within the political framework.

On the domestic front, Hafiz Naeem took aim at the Punjab government, criticising its short-term measures to provide relief to the public, stating that the relief package was only set to last for two months, which he implied was insufficient for the challenges faced by the population.
