Opp, govt agree on uncontested Senate elections in KP

Senate elections

PESHAWAR: Opposition and government parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have agreed on uncontested Senate elections. The government will receive six out of 11 seats, while the opposition parties will get five seats.

Formal announcement of the agreement will be done today. The meeting between representatives of the government and the opposition continued well into the night, yesterday. During the meeting it was decided to not contest senate elections.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Opposition leader Ibadullah Khan were present during the meeting, along with others, sources said.

Sources also said that despite the agreement, some covering candidates from the ruling party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are not on board with this decision. PTI’s Irfan Saleem and other covering candidates have not withdrawn yet, causing hurdles for uncontested elections, party sources said on Friday.

However, issues are likely to be settled in the meeting of party leaders with Irfan Saleem group today, sources said, adding that these covering candidates also met with PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja last night.
