PHC verdict

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has granted bail to several prominent political figures, including former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, former Minister Zartaj Gul, Omar Ayub, and Faisal Amin.

These members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were facing charges for exceeding the scheduled time for a political gathering.

According to the petitioner’s lawyer, the case was registered following a First Information Report (FIR) filed by authorities, who accused the organisers of the event of failing to adhere to the pre-approved time limit.

The defence argued that the FIR was unjustified and that the organisers were not given a chance to address any potential violations.

During the hearing, Justice Shakeel Ahmed expressed his surprise at the state’s involvement in the matter, remarking, “This is the first time I am witnessing the state actively pursuing such a request.”

His comment reflected the unusual nature of the case, where the state itself became a petitioner against political leaders for what is generally seen as a minor administrative issue.

The case has stirred discussions about political oversight and the treatment of opposition figures in the current political climate.
