PML-N hails May 9 case verdict, but also notes lenient treatment

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik on Tuesday described the judgement in one of the May 9 cases as a victory of law and constitution, saying violent attacks were carried out on that day in a planned manner.

Meanwhile, the other barrister, Barrister Zafarullah, expressed his disappointment, saying that the PTI has been receiving an undue “lenient treatment” and the things would have been totally different if the PML-N or the PPP were involved in such acts.

In a statement, Malik said all legal requirements had been met in the case which has produced a 10-year sentence for Malik Ahmad Bachar and other PTI leaders and workers.

He mentioned that comprehensive evidence, including visuals, proved the involvement of PTI in attacks on sensitive installations, which no government could allow.

The May 9 attacks erupted “suddenly” after the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan who has been since then incarcerated in the Adiala jail.

Although Imran is convicted in the corruption cases, he has been facing more alarming prospects of being tried in a military court in connection with the May 9 affairs.

The PTI founder has been accused of masterminding the planned attacks.

Meanwhile, one of the main accused Murad Saeed was elected as a senator on Monday despite being an absconder for over two years.

FAILED ‘REVOLUTION’

In the evening, Barrister Zafarullah, who has served as a special assistant to the prime minister in the Nawaz Sharif government, said attacks on military installations were carried across the country.

He was talking in “Faisala Aap Ka”, a prime time talk show hosted by Asma Shirazi on HUM News.

While explaining his point of view about the lenient treatment of PTI, he said the May cases should be decided within two to three months.

The PTI tried to bring a “revolution”, but the attempt failed, he remarked and called for an iron hand to deal with those involved in the May 9 attacks.

26TH AMENDMENT

When it comes to the 26th Amendment, Barrister Zafarullah revealed that he was against the legislation and favoured a separate Constitutional Court.

Formation of a Constitutional Bench was the PTI’s suggestion, he said and added that both Prime Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari agreed to the proposal, with an argument that let’s move forward together.
