LAHORE: The Central General Council of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) is convening today in Lahore to elect the party’s new president. There is a strong possibility that Nawaz Sharif will be elected unopposed, signalling a significant development in the party’s leadership.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)’s member, Kheal Das Kohistani reached the party secretariat to oversee the conduct of the election. Other party members present include Rana Sanaullah, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Ishrat Ashraf, and Jamal Shah Kakar.

The election overseeing body has confirmed the receipt of 11 nomination papers endorsing Nawaz Sharif as the party president. Notably, these nominations have been submitted by top officials from all four provinces, as well as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Nomination papers can be submitted until 12 noon today at the Party Secretariat in Model Town, Lahore. The process has seen notable figures such as PML-N Sindh President Bashir Memon, PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Amir Maqam, and PML-N Azad Kashmir President Shah Ghulam Qadir arriving at the secretariat to submit their nomination papers as well. Additionally, party leader Senator Nizhat Sadiq has also reached the party headquarters to partake in the process.

However, the support for Nawaz Sharif underscores his enduring influence within the party and the broader political landscape of Pakistan. The formal election process and the anticipated announcement of Sharif’s unopposed election as president will be closely watched by political observers and PML-N supporters across the country.
