DHAKA: After Bangladesh’s group stage exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, one of the teams most experienced players, Mushfiqur Rahim, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

The announcement comes after a poor showing in the Champions Trophy from the 37-year-old. In the two matches Bangladesh played, Rahim only managed to score two runs, as he was dismissed for a golden duck against India, and on the fifth delivery he faced against New Zealand.

Rahim thanked his family, friends, and fans as well.

A Storied Career

The Bangladesh wicket-keeper batter has scored nearly 7800 runs in his storied career. He has an average of 36.42, and made his high score of 144 in the 50 over format against Sri Lanka in September 2018. Rahim has scored 49 half centuries and nine tons across the 256 innings he’s played.

Since beginning his career in 2006, he has played for the Bangladesh side for nearly 19 years and captained the team between 2011 and 2018, overseeing 37 ODI matches, 34 test matches, and 23 T20Is.

After making his mark on the international stage by sending Bangladesh to the knockout stages of the 2007 World Cup, through scoring an undefeated 56 which propel Bangladesh to victory over India, Rahim became a mainstay on the team.

He was also an integral part of Bangladesh’s advancement to the quarter finals in the 2015 world cup, as he put on three great performances, scoring 71 runs against Afghanistan, 60 runs against Scotland, and 89 runs against England, to help give Bangladesh three wins in the group stage.

Rahim had already retired from the T20I format after the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, he will likely continue to play tests, as he has the opportunity to become the first Bangladeshi player to reach 100 matches in the format. He currently sits at 94 matches played with the red ball.

The Bangladesh batter is now the second player to retire from ODI cricket following the Champions Trophy, with Australia’s Steven Smith announcing his departure from the format earlier.
