BOSTON: The Celtics continued their dominance on opening night as they beat the New York Knicks on Tuesday, after winning the National Basketball Association (NBA) championship earlier in 2024.
The Celtics made 29 three pointers, breaking the record for most three pointers made on opening night, but fell just short of breaking the record for most three-point field goals ever made in a game. They tied with eh Milwaukee Bucks who made 29 three pointers of their own in 2020 against the Miami Heat.
Jayson Tatum was the star of the show, getting an early start on rebuking critics who said he may not be as good as fans once thought. Jaylen Brown ended up taking home the NBA finals MVP in June, and Tatum’s lack of play among the star-studded Olympic line-up only added to the narrative.
However, sinking eight three pointers on a 72.7 per cent clip was a good start to silencing those rooting against him. He made a total of 37 points, shooting 77.8 per cent from the field, scoring 14 of his 18 attempted baskets.

The whole team soon joined in on the fun. Brown shot 55.6 per cent from three, making five of his nine three pointers. While shooting a good clip from three, the 2024 finals MVP struggled to hit many shots from inside the arc, ending with 23 points on 38.9 per cent clip.
Derrick White made 6 of his 10 shots from beyond the arc along with a couple of two pointers to bring his total to 24 for the night. Jrue Holiday and Al Horford hit four and three shots from deep respectively. Sam Hauser also hit a couple of threes, while Payton Prichard hit one.
Despite being a great opening night for the Celtics, they missed out on an even more historic performance by a streak of poor shooting in the fourth quarter. After Horford sunk his third three to tie the record for three point makes in a single game, the Celtics went cold with 8:50 left on the clock. Boston missed 13 three pointers in a row, with the biggest contributors being Pritchard and Hauser, who missed five and four shots from deep respectively.
Still, the Boston Celtics handily beat the New York Knicks 132 to 109 on opening night.
