David Warner retires following Australia’s exit from T20 world cup

David Warner retirement

SYDNEY: The 15-year international cricketing career of Australia’s David Warner drew to a close after the team got knocked out of the T20 World Cup owing to Afghanistan’s triumph over Bangladesh in their Super 8 clash on Tuesday.

Warner’s departure from the international stage was subdued, as he walked off the field in St. Lucia uncertain if it was truly his final appearance in an Australia shirt.

Warner’s retirement has been a gradual process. He played his last ODI in November’s World Cup final victory over India, and his final Test against Pakistan in January.

He had long indicated that this T20 World Cup would mark his last tournament. Though he has left the possibility open for a return in next year’s Champions Trophy, it seems unlikely.

His final match, against India, ended in an anti-climax: Warner scored just six runs off six balls before edging a delivery from Arshdeep Singh to slip, where Suryakumar Yadav took a good low catch. Frustrated, Warner punched his bat with his right hand and walked off the pitch with his head bowed. Since he wasn’t certain it was his last game.

Warner concludes his career with an impressive 3,277 runs in T20 internationals over 110 matches.
