Gillespie named ODI coach, PCB accepts Kirsten’s resignation

Gillespie

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that Jason Gillespie will be the head coach of Pakistan’s white ball cricket team, after accepting Gary Kirsten’s resignation.

Following the departure of Gary Kirsten, Pakistan’s test format head coach, Jason Gillespie, was named the new white ball coach. Gillespie will be accompanying the team to Australia for the ODI series which is set to kick off on November 4.

Sources reported that Aaqib Javed, former cricketer and a member of the selection committee, was also considered for the role, as well as former cricketer Azhar Mehmood.

Javed was recently given a larger degree of authority thanks to the PCB’s acceptance of his recommendation to reduce the selection committee members from 11 to 6.

Kirsten resigns as Pakistan head coach, Gillespie likely to replace

The rift between the PCB and Kirsten is thought to be related to his removal from the selection process. Gillespie has also been vocal about his feelings regarding the PCB and the selection committee, previously stating that his role has been turned into a “match-day strategist.”

“I was not involved in the decision making,” Gillespie said explaining the PBC’s choices following the loss against England in the first test.

“I’m not a selector, I’m a match day strategist,” Gillespie said while making air quotes while stressing the word strategist, adding that his “focus is on the players.”

Shortly after he said that he’s “getting splinters on his ass from sitting on the fence.”
