Javelin throwing is a field event in athletics where athletes hurl a javelin as far as possible within specified boundaries on a field. The javelin is typically around 2.6 to 2.7 meters long for men and slightly shorter for women.

During competition, athletes start from a runway and must release the javelin before a foul line. The distance is measured from where the javelin lands on the ground. Success in this event depends on combining speed, strength, and precise coordination. Athletes use a run-up to build momentum and throw the javelin overhand to achieve the farthest distance possible.

It has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1908 for men and since 1932 for women.
