Nicholas Pooran breaks Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes

West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran has broken the world record for the most sixes hit in a calendar year, previously held by the Universe Boss Chris Gayle.
Pooran, known his batting style, hit a record 139 sixes in T20 cricket during 2024, the most by any batsman in a single year in the history of cricket.

This year, Pooran hit 36 sixes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) making him the record holder for the most sixes in a single tournament. He also hit 31 sixes in the International League T20 (ILT20), 19 in The Hundred, 34 in T20 Internationals, and 17 in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Pooran broke Gayle’s record, which was unbroken since 2015. Pooran achieved this record during a match in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), scoring 97 runs off 43 balls with 9 sixes.
Gayle had set the record in 2015 by hitting 135 sixes off 1,012 balls at an average of 7.50 balls per six, spanning 36 innings. Pooran hit his 139 sixes off 1,145 balls at an average of 8.23 balls per six in 57 tours.

Pooran hit 92 sixes off fast bowlers and 47 off spinners, while Gayle had hit 68 sixes off fast bowlers and 66 off spinners.
Pooran leads the record for overall most sixes as well as the most sixes in the middle overs. However, the record for the most sixes in T20 cricket is still held by Gayle.
