Shohei Ohtani breaks MLB record

Shohei Ohtani

MIAMI: On Thursday night, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani became the first player in Major League Baseball (MLB) history to score 50 runs and steal 50 bases in a single season.

The 23-year-old baseball phenom continued to impress on Friday as the Dodgers obliterated the Miami Marlins 20 – 4.

Shohei Ohtani came into the game having scored 48 runs and stolen 49 bases in the season so far. He quickly stole third base to get number 50 in the first inning before stealing his 51st in the sixth. Moments later he would hit his first home run of the game and his 49th of the season.

By this point the two-time MVP had already tied the record for most home runs in a game by a Dodger, however that didn’t last long as he hit number 50 in the very next inning, making MLB history.

Two innings later Ohtani hit number 51 with runners on first and second, bringing the game total to 17-3. By the end of the inning the Dodgers total had risen to 20. Marlins’ catcher Nick Fortes homered in the bottom of the night, but it was far too little and far too late.

Ohtani’s historic night ended with 3 homers, 4 runs, 10 runs batted in (RBI), and two stolen bases. With the Dodgers sitting at the top of the National League West, tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for the best record in all of MLB at 91 wins and 62 losses, it seems their historic signing of the Japanese two-way player was well worth it.

The Dodgers signed Ohtani to a 10-year $700 million contract in 2023.
