PCB name Aaqib Javed as interim white-ball coach

Javed

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Aaqib Javed as the interim head coach of the white ball cricket team on Monday.

Javed will be coaching alongside occupying senior role in the National Selection Committee. He will coach the team until the end of next years Champions Trophy, which kicks off in February and ends in March.

The PCB stated that “during this tenure, Aqib will continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee, and will be assigned additional responsibilities following the conclusion of the eight-team tournament.”

The PCB are also beginning the recruitment process for a permanent coach for the white-ball team. They expect to finalise the appointment by the end of the Champions Trophy.

The shakeup within Pakistan’s coaching staff comes after Gary Kirsten resigned as Pakistan’s white-ball coach at the end of October. Kirsten’s dissatisfaction with the PCB is thought to be due to his removal from the selection process.

In the last ODI series against Australia, test coach Jason Gillespie filled Kirsten’s shoes, leading Pakistan to a 2-1 series win against the Aussies. However, Gillespie has also been vocal about his feelings regarding the removal of his input from the selection committee. “I’m not a selector, I’m a match day strategist,” Gillespie said.

Pakistan’s next ODI and T20 series for Pakistan is against Zimbabwe and is set to begin on 24 November.
