Womens world cup

LAHORE: Scotland beat the West Indies in the second match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier on Wednesday, despite an incredible all-round performance from Haley Matthews that saw her dominate with the ball and the bat.

Scotland’s Innings

Abbi Aitken-Drummond and Darcey Carter got Scotland off to a good start, putting together a 48 run opening stand, before the former was dismissed in the 12th over. Aitken was caught behind on a delivery from West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews. She made 21 runs off 32 deliveries. Skipper Kathryn Bryce then made her way to the field, but didn’t stay long, as Matthews picked up her second wicket in her next over with a little more help from Shemaine Campbelle.

Matthews kept up the pressure taking yet another wicket in her third consecutive over. This time it was the other half of Scotland’s opening stand, Carter, who was caught out by Aaliyah Alleyne. Carter managed to make 25 runs off 48 deliveries.

The skipper’s sister, Sarah Bryce, added some stability to Scotland’s innings, as she scored her second ever ODI half century. She made 55 runs off 56 deliveries, hitting six fours along the way, before she too fell at Matthew’s hands in the 34th over, as the delivery eventually ended up in Karishma Ramharack’s hands. Ailsa Lister was run out on a delivery from Matthews that was facilitated by Chinelle Henry. Bryce also made a team high partnership of 82 runs off 74 deliveries with Megan McColl.

McColl made an individual total of 45 off 44 before she too was run out in the 37th over by Henry on a delivery from Ramharack. Priyanaz Chatterji and Chloe Abel were both sent off via lbw in the 39th and 43rd over respectively, on deliveries from Ramharack, giving the year old spin bowler two wickets for the innings.

Alleyne took the final two wickets of the game in the 45th over, as Hannah Rainey was caught out by Ramharack, before Abtaha Maqsood was sent off via lbw.

Despite Matthews incredible four wicket haul, Scotland still managed to put up a total of 244 runs in the 45 overs they played.

West Indies’ Innings

The West Indies ran in to trouble immediately, as Qiana Joseph was dismissed for a duck after hitting the ball directly back to the bowler, Darcey Carter, who made the catch. However, Matthews and Zaida James put on an incredible second wicket stand, adding 113 runs to their total off 149 deliveries. The partnership came to an end in the 27th over, when James was caught out by Katherine Fraser on a delivery from Chloe Abel. James made 45 runs off 89 deliveries, hitting five fours and one six along the way.

Shemaine Campbelle and Stafanie Taylor were both dismissed without making much of a contribuition. Campbelle added nine runs before she was caught behind on a delivery from Kathryn Bryce in the 33rd. Taylor added eight off ten before she was run out in the 36th.

Chinelle Henry replaced her and made her presence felt immediately, hitting two sixes on consecutive deliveries. However, on the third delivery she faced, and the last of the over, she was caught behind on a delivery from Maqsood.

Shabika Gajnabi left the field in the 39th after only adding two runs. She was caught behind, giving Abel her second wicket of the game. Cherry-Ann Fraser was bowled by Katherine Fraser in the 40th over, and in her next over, Afy Fletcher and Rahmarack were caught out, the latter by Fraser herself.

But, as her teammates fell one by one, Matthews was still going strong. She brought up a century in the 42nd over. However, it wasn’t enough to conquer the West Indies. In the 47th over Alleyne was dismissed via lbw, as Maqsood took her second wicket of the game.

Scotland beat the West Indies by 11 runs despite an incredible all-round performance from Hayley Matthews, which saw her take four wickets and score 114 runs.
