MADRID: Spain’s acting prime minister Pedro Sánchez has critcised Luis Rubiales’ post-match kiss to midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 ceremony, calling it “unacceptable.”
In the aftermath of Spain’s women’s World Cup win against England, the president of the Spanish football federation Rubiales garnered attention by embracing player Jennifer Hermoso and kissing her on the lips during the medal ceremony.
This incident quickly sparked widespread controversy and drew condemnation from multiple quarters. The acting equality minister characterised it as a “manifestation of sexual violence,” while the international players’ union Fifpro, based in the Netherlands, considered it inappropriate under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, Spain’s acting premier Sánchez on Tuesday asserted that Rubiales’ actions highlighted Spain’s ongoing need to advance gender equality and women’s rights.
Sánchez said that Rubiales’ offered apologies were insufficient and urged him to take stronger measures to address the problem. Furthermore, a national football coach Miguel Galán officially lodged a complaint with the National Sports Council.
The controversy has triggered debates regarding the treatment of women in sports and the need for a fairer and more respectful environment. Despite Rubiales’ initial dismissal of the criticism, his later apologies didn’t calm the situation.
The incident has marred Spain’s World Cup victory celebration and highlighted persisting gender inequality concerns.
Amidst the heated debates, political figures were calling for Rubiales’ resignation, underscoring the significance of upholding existing protocols and laws to ensure a fair and respectful treatment in sports.
