WEB DESK: Apple has recently initiated a workforce reduction, resulting in the dismissal of over six hundred employees, as per data sourced from a California state agency.
This marks the first instance of job cuts post the pandemic era for the tech giant renowned for its iPhone products.
Unlike some of its counterparts such as Amazon, Meta, and Google, which underwent significant layoffs last year, Apple had largely avoided such actions due to its extensive hiring activities amidst the pandemic.
However, on March 27, the California-based company implemented layoffs across several office locations, affecting a total of 614 workers, as reported under the California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).
Despite inquiries made early Friday, Apple has yet to provide any comments regarding these developments.
Sources suggest that the layoffs are linked to the company’s abandoned plans for an electric vehicle project, marking the end of a challenging decade-long endeavor.
Reports from Bloomberg indicate that Apple had allocated nearly 2,000 employees to its clandestine car development initiative. However, stiff competition within the electric vehicle (EV) sector posed significant challenges.
It’s worth noting that the actual extent of the layoffs may be broader, considering that Apple is legally obligated to report job cuts only within the state of California.
