What’s new in Bluetooth 6.0?

Bluetooth 6.0 upgrade

WEB DESK: Bluetooth 6.0 is now officially released, and whether we realise it or not, many of us heavily rely on this wireless technology.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) – which includes tech giants such as Intel, Apple, and Google – has announced a series of significant upgrades that will enhance how Bluetooth devices communicate and perform.

One of the main focuses of Bluetooth 6.0 is improving communication efficiency between devices. The new update ensures that Bluetooth devices only exchange data when necessary, reducing unnecessary data transmission. This advancement is expected to extend battery life by limiting the strain on devices.

While the core transmission speed of Bluetooth remains unchanged, optimised data management should lead to faster transfer rates in practice. This means devices like fitness trackers could sync and update more rapidly than before.

A standout feature of Bluetooth 6.0 is “Channel Sounding.” This innovation allows compatible devices to more accurately measure the distance between them, with precision down to one centimetre (0.4 inches).

Although not every Bluetooth 6.0 device will support this, it’s a game-changer for services like Apple’s Find My, Google’s tracking system, and Tile, making it easier to locate lost items across a broader range of gadgets.

Additionally, Bluetooth 6.0 could enhance wireless operations such as unlocking cars or controlling smart locks. While Apple’s Find My service currently uses ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for precise tracking, Bluetooth 6.0 will make similar functionality available to a wider variety of devices.

Bluetooth 6.0 is set to offer greater convenience and accuracy, expanding its potential applications in everyday tech.
