macOS Sequoia released: Which Macs are compatible and what’s new?

macOS Sequoia update

WEB DESK: Apple has officially launched macOS Sequoia, the latest version of its operating system, after weeks of testing since its announcement at WWDC in June.

This new update introduces several exciting features, including iPhone Mirroring and a dedicated Passwords app, designed to enhance user experience.

Key features of macOS Sequoia

One of the standout features in macOS Sequoia is iPhone Mirroring, allowing users to mirror their iPhone screen on their Mac and control it using a mouse and keyboard. This feature works wirelessly with iPhones running iOS 18 or later.

While in use, the iPhone screen turns off or enters standby mode to preserve battery and ensure privacy. You can even use trackpad gestures and view notifications from your iPhone directly on your Mac.

The update also brings Apple’s new Passwords app, which provides easy access and management of passwords stored in iCloud. For gamers, Sequoia reduces audio lag when using AirPods Pro 2, while developers will find it easier to convert Windows games to run on macOS.

Other new features

Improved window management: Making it simpler to arrange windows side by side.

Video conferencing enhancements: New backgrounds and a Presenter preview for apps like FaceTime.

Safari Highlights: Automatically highlights key webpage information such as phone numbers and addresses.

iMessage updates: Includes new text effects, formatting options, and the ability to schedule messages to be sent later.

Apple Maps upgrades: Offers topographic maps and hiking routes.

Notes app: Features audio recording with live transcription and support for Math Expressions.

Privacy and security improvements: Strengthened protection across the system.

Calendar reminders: Users can set reminders directly within the Calendar app.

Apple is also working on additional tools like Writing Tools and a Clean Up feature in the Photos app, but these will arrive in October with macOS 15.1. The drag-and-drop function for iPhone Mirroring is also expected in a later update.

Compatibility

macOS Sequoia is available for the following Mac models:

iMac (2019 and later)

Mac Studio (2022 and later)

Mac mini (2018 and later)

Mac Pro (2019 and later)

iMac Pro (2017)

MacBook Air (2020 and later)

However, some features, such as Writing Tools, will only work on Macs with Apple Silicon chips (M1 or later).
