OpenAI abandons plan to become for-profit company


OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company would continue to be run as a nonprofit, abandoning plans to turn into a for-profit organisation.

SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Monday said the company behind ChatGPT would continue to be run as a non-profit, as it abandoned a highly contested plan to turn into a for-profit organisation.

“We made the decision for the non-profit to stay in control after hearing from civic leaders and having discussions with the offices of the Attorneys General of California and Delaware,” Altman said in an email to staff posted on the company’s website.
