OpenAI restructures as Mira Murati becomes latest to leave

OpenAI

SAN FRANCISCO: The Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, Mira Murati, stated on Wednesday that she would be leaving the company. The news comes alongside a restructuring of the company that will see it become a for-profit benefit corporation.

Murati, who was heavily involved in the development of ChatGPT and Dall-E, is set to become the latest to leave the company, following the departure of co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman.

The CTO had joined the company in 2018 and became the interim CEO when Sam Altman was ousted before being restored to her previous role upon his return.

Murati stated that she wants to “create time and space to do my own exploration.”

Altman praised her, saying he feels “tremendous gratitude towards her for what she has helped us build and accomplish” and that he is “excited for what she’ll do next.”

Her departure comes at a time at which OpenAI is restructuring. After initially being created as a non-profit research lab, the company is now undergoing a shift that will see it become a for-profit benefit corporation, as reported by Reuters.

The move will entice investors with the promise of larger returns. CEO Sam Altman will also gain equity stake in the company.

Despite reassurance that the non-profit arm of OpenAI will continue to exist and that the company’s focus will not divert from advancing AI for humanity’s benefit, the AI safety community is concerned.
