BIRMINGHAM: In a splashy twist on family fun, Brigham Young University (BYU) Employee Wellness hosted its annual Ducky Derby on Friday.

The event saw rubber ducks racing along the South Campus Stream, bringing joy and excitement to over 600 employees and their families, local news reported.

Emily Fielding, the wellness coordinator for BYU Employee Wellness, highlighted the event’s popularity, noting that competitors even reserve their ducks in advance to secure a spot in the race. While waiting for their turn to race, families enjoyed a variety of lawn games provided by BYU Employee Wellness.

Em Carter, the daughter of a BYU employee, shared her excitement: “I had lots of fun at the ducky race today, and my ducky got second place,” she said. “It was really fun to watch him race with other ducks.”

Fielding emphasised the event’s contribution to the main goal of BYU Employee Wellness—to enhance employee happiness and productivity. “One of the biggest challenges that employees across the nation are experiencing is trying to find a work-life balance,” Fielding explained. “A big part of this activity is trying to help improve that work-life balance by providing a fun family get-together activity provided by their employer.”

The Ducky Derby is also a way to give back to the employees who play a crucial role in the university’s mission. “With BYU’s vision, mission and aims focused on students, our office strives to help employees be well so that they can fulfill their part in achieving BYU’s mission and aims here [at] BYU to help students become their best selves,” Fielding said.

The top winners of the Ducky Derby were awarded stuffed ducks, adding a delightful touch to the quack-tastic day.
